RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY
Craniofacial reconstruction
The treatment of distortions in the head and face may involve surgery to the brain, eyes, facial skin and bones, the skull and nerves. The combination of plastic surgery and neurosurgery will vary according to individual severity and complexity of the irregularities. While the client is under general anaesthesia, the surgery can be completed anywhere between four and 12 hours.
In craniofacial reconstructions, some facial bones are cut and placed into a more natural facial structure, sometimes taking bone from other areas of their body, such as the ribs or skull. Possible swelling to the face, neck or mouth to swell, may require the insertion of a breathing tube into the neck to provide a temporary airway post-surgery.
