Breast augmentation
The aim of breast augmentation is to produce full, soft, natural breasts that are in proportion to the rest of the body. Patients are typically seen at least twice to discuss their individual preferences for size and approach. Most women request breast augmentation if they have small or asymmetrical breasts or have lost breast tissue after pregnancy or breastfeeding. Whether performed in conjunction with breast lift or not, breast augmentation is a well established procedure for either increasing the size or evening out the shape of breasts. Over 3 million such procedures have been performed over the past 30 years.
Modern breast augmentation is usually highly successful in achieving a pleasing result. Improvements in implant design mean hardening of the breast is now very rare, and it is now generally accepted that Silicone provides the best material for women breast implants and does not cause collagen disorders and other problems. Saline implants are safe but may cause rippling of the skin of the breast and would need replacing if they leak. Cohesive gel silicone implants need a slightly longer access incision to place them but do not leak if the shell is later damaged. Silicone gel-filled implants also provide a more natural feel to the breast and are less likely to cause rippling. Neither type of implant will last a lifetime and may have to be replaced after 15 years.
Breast implants surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic and involves an overnight stay in hospital. Recovery from the breast implants surgery usually takes four weeks before resuming full activity.
Augmentation surgery results in a small scar on the base of the breast or around the nipple. It is also possible to place the scar in the armpit. A rare result may be reduced nipple sensation.
